Ode To Joy: Windham Loops and Beethoven's 9th - 3pm
50 Main St
Brattleboro, VT 05301
(802) 254-6300
Price: donation!!
RESCHEDULED: Windham Orchestra "ODE TO JOY" Sunday, July 10, 3 pm, Latchis Theatre, Brattleboro, VT Where were you when the lights went out? Whether you experienced the magic in the dark theatre during the power outage or missed it entirely, the good news is that the Windham Orchestra’s interrupted performance of Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy" has been rescheduled. On Sunday, July 10, 3 pm, at the Latchis Theatre in Brattleboro, Vermont, the Windham Orchestra, under the direction of Hugh Keelan, will present Beethoven's iconic Symphony No. 9, “Ode to Joy,” with the Windham Festival Chorus; and Derrik Jordan's newly commissioned work fusing classical and world music, “Windham Loops.” Admission is by donation, everyone welcome! Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, known as the 'Choral' or the 'Ode to Joy,’ is considered one of the greatest musical compositions ever written. In it the composer addresses the highest hopes, struggles and gratifications of the human condition. It is a powerful human narrative, a challenging journey, but more certain of its destination, more elevated in its aspirations than maybe anything that had been written before. Beethoven's Ninth Symphony occupies an iconic place in cultures far beyond the one called 'classical music'. We hear the 'Ode to Joy' in commercials and pop-culture references, it saturates education systems, it was an essential accompaniment to the fall of the Berlin Wall and A Clockwork Orange; the Rainbow Theater in London (where Hendrix burnt his first guitar) would always play the Ninth at the end of a rock concert. These are easy examples of the diversity this work gathers around itself. The symphony was the first example of a major composer using voices in a symphony (thus making it a choral symphony). The words are sung during the final movement by four vocal soloists and a chorus. They were taken from the "Ode to Joy", a poem written by Friedrich Schiller in 1785 and revised in 1803, with additions made by the composer. The first movement deals with mystery, suffering and the possibility of transcendence, not yet the reality. The fast Scherzo, placed second, is sharply funny, briefly consoling, but seems especially interested in making vividly present a demonic energy and life force. The third movement, Adagio molto e cantabile, also deeply mysterious, speaks of solace and deepest calm. Each of these elements must be experienced and accepted for the transcendent to become manifest in the incredible finale. Back by popular demand, the Windham Orchestra will also encore Derrik Jordan’s newly commissioned “Windham Loops,” which was performed in its entirety before the power failure during the original concert. “Windham Loops,” which fuses classical and world music, was composed for the Windham Orchestra and Impulse Ensemble. This performance will feature Tony Vacca on Balafon and percussion, and Derrik Jordan on the Five String Electric Violin. The movements themselves contain a wide range of influences ranging from Indian and Middle Eastern fusion to Pygmy polyphonic singing, American funk and the music of Bali. The purpose is to carry the listener on a journey influenced by a wide range of world music styles. Don’t miss the Windham Orchestra’s rescheduled performance of “Ode to Joy” on Sunday, July 10, 3 pm at the Latchis Theatre in Brattleboro, VT. Admission is by donation, everyone welcome. For more information visit www.bmcvt.org or www.windhamorchestra.org.

Sixth Street Community Synagogue
2VC Cello Duo - 2 pm
325 E6th St (between 1st and 2nd Ave)
New York, NY
Price: $15
2VC Cello Duo 2VC is an ensemble dedicated to expanding the repertoire for the cello duo. We think one cello is great, but two is even better! Unfortunately, most of the classical masters didn't see if that way. 2VC is dedicated to commissioning composers to write new music for two cellos, and occasionally with an additional instrument thrown in. 2VC members are cellists Jessie Reagen Mann and Eugene Carr, who met as Musicians-in-Residence at Congregation B'nai Jeshuran on Manhattans's Upper West Side. There they discovered the joy in playing together and quickly realized how few pieces were composed for 2 cellos. Together, they bring experience in playing varied styles of music - from Classical, Rock, Improvisatory to Jazz and they bring that same expansive vision to the new works they commission. In this performance, 2VC will be joined by Ronen Itzik (percussion) and Amanda Monoco (guitar). Calling all Composers! The 2pm workshop will explore the composers experience of writing for 2 cellos. Come meet some of the emerging composers 2VC has commissioned and learn about their writing process. What is their approach in writing for 2 of the same instrument? What are the challenges and what are their inspirations? This will be a wonderful opportunity to learn from some of the most talented composers living today. $15 includes 3pm concert, 2pm workshop and a beverage!

Zabap meets Jazzismo. The concert includes Jazzismo’s Cuban and Latin-jazz based material, Zabap’s roots in Martinique and Ghana, and Eugene’s Colombian sounds. It’s an exciting range and it showcases how jazz can draw from all over the globe. Zabap includes Eugene Uman on piano; Derrik Jordan, leader of the world beat band Simba, on electric violin; and VJC stalwart Jamie MacDonald on bass. Zabap is completed by three percussionists: Doug Raneri (drumset), Steve Ferraris (percussion), and Julian Gerstin. Raneri is a polyrhythmic master who has performed with numerous regional groups. Ferraris’s credits span from the Sun Ra Arkestra to West African djembe drumming, and he is also a charter member of Jazzismo. Gerstin’s background includes folkloric traditions from Martinique, Ghana, and Cuba, as well as several experimental jazz ensembles. As Zabap’s organizer and composer, Gerstin says his goal is to create jazz from traditional sources that usually remain untapped.
